Life cycle assessment (LCA) quantifies the environmental footprint of a material, product, or process across its full life — raw material extraction, production, use, and end-of-life. It's increasingly required for regulatory reporting, customer disclosures, and investor ESG requirements. That's usually where the conversation starts and ends: LCA as a reporting obligation, commissioned once the technology choice has already been made.

Why that ordering costs companies real options

By the time a process or material has been selected, scaled, and is running, the footprint is largely locked in. An LCA at that point can describe the impact accurately — but it can no longer change it. The material substitutions, energy source decisions, and process route choices that would have had the biggest effect were all available earlier, before the decision was made, not after.

What changes when LCA moves earlier

  • It becomes a comparison tool, not a report. Used during technology or material selection, LCA can directly compare two process routes or two material candidates on footprint alongside performance and cost — turning it into one more input to the decision, not a postscript to it.
  • It surfaces trade-offs the technical team may not see. A process that looks efficient on cost and yield can carry a disproportionate energy or resource footprint once the full life cycle is mapped — additive manufacturing routes, for instance, often trade material efficiency against energy intensity in ways that aren't obvious from process data alone.
  • It strengthens the commercial case. Investors, customers, and regulators increasingly want evidence, not assurances. A material or process choice that was screened on life-cycle grounds from the start is a stronger story — and a stronger due-diligence answer — than an LCA commissioned to justify a decision already made.

None of this requires an LCA specialist parachuted in at the end of a project. It requires life-cycle thinking sitting next to the technical and commercial questions from the start — which is a framing problem as much as a technical one.
